The primary activity of the Central Honduras Education Fund is to provide academic scholarships to deserving students from rural central Honduran communities. The goal is that these students will become self-sufficient and productive citizens who contribute to the development and capacity of their communities. The Central Honduras Education Fund provides hope in the form of access to education for a rural population struggling for economic and social equality. Despite a trend that indicates very limited and often nonexistent educational opportunities, The Central Honduras Education Fund looks to break the barriers and build leaders from within these very communities.
In 2005, three Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (Dave, Aaron and Mike) established the Central Honduras Education Fund after spending two-plus years living and working in Central Honduras (July 2002 to September 2004). Today we are supported by a wonderful group of advisors, individual donors and organizations who help support the Fund through both financial and inspirational contributions. Entering 2011, a total of 10 students who will be attending either college or high school who would otherwise be unable to do so thanks to the generosity and hard work of our collaborators and staff.
